Week 2 of the FedExCup playoffs and day 1 of the BMW Championship at Caves Valley Golf Club, par 72. Teeing off at 1:31pm EDT with Jordan Spieth and Harris English from the first tee. Not really knowing what to expect after last weeks rounds and the Monday finish, I really had no expectations coming in to today. I had an idea of what I wanted him to do, go out shoot -6, drive some greens, make an eagle or two, birdie a bunch, the typical DeChambeau round ya know? But instead we had an opening round 34-34-68 (-4) Which by no stretch of the imagination was it a bad round but there were plenty of shots left out there that hopefully he gets back tomorrow.

Plenty of putts inside 15 feet, definitely even inside 10 feet that were missed for pars or birdies that could have gotten him a lot closer to that -8. And a few bogeys that could have been avoided from because of these little errors: a penalty shot, a bad second and missed putt, and a 3 putt. All in all a pretty well rounded scorecard and a lot better than the opening round from last week. Consistency and improvement is always a good thing.

Hole-by-hole:

Hole 1 par 4, 365 yards. 355 yards off the tee trying to drive the green. Ends up short in the bunker and hits it out to 15 feet. Doesn’t make the putt and 15 inches for a par.

Hole 2 par 5, 589 yards. 338 yards off the tee to the fairway. 258 yards left and once again short in the right green side bunker. Hits a great shot out to 9 feet 10 inches but can’t make the putt. 3 feet for his par.

Hole 3 par 3, 224 yards. Finds the green with a beauty to 12 feet 4 inches. Misses and 20 inches for a par. This is 3 putts inside 15 feet missed. E, T45

Hole 4 par 5, 590 yards. Left rough 355 yards off the tee. Gets it past the trees and through the dogleg. With 218 yards left, his second is 46 yards short and in the rough. Proceeds to then leave that chip short of the green. 46 feet for his fourth shot on this hole and gets it to 6 feet 5 inches for a par. Remains E

Hole 5 par 4, 356 yards. Tried to drive the green again, 306 off the tee and left in the green side bunker. About 25 yards for his eagle chip to the back pin. Out to 9 feet 11 inches and drains the putt to still make a birdie. 1st of the day and goes from T51st to T37th.

Hole 6 par 3, 223 yards. Pin high and left to 15 feet 1 inch. Does he make the putt? Unfortunately there was too much on that one and he has 15 inches that he taps in for a par.

Hole 7 par 4, 430 yards. A little left off the tee that wasn’t a bad shot, but it wasn’t enough and ends up in the fairway bunker 329 yards out. 93 yards to the pin and hits it well over the green to the hill on the ‘native area’ unfortunately he wasn’t featured yet so I really have no idea what this shot looked like. Takes a drop and now hitting his 4th shot he chips to 10 feet 6 inches. Makes the putt to get away with a bogey and he falls back to E.

Hole 8 par 4, 474 yards. Finds the fairway 320 yards off the tee and with 144 yards left he hits a shot in to 13 feet 5 inches. Sinks the putt and back to -1 today and T40th. Now a featured group we can finally see some shots…

Hole 9 par 4, 466 yards. Left fairway off the tee 315 yards. 147 left he hits the green yet again and with a dart to 9 feet 9 inches, sinks another birdie on the day. Closes the front 9 with a -2, 34.

Hole 10 par 4, 464 yards. Another bomb, another fairway. 346 yards and 102 to the hole, it hits the green but spins back just off the edge. Putting from the fringe, its close but not enough. 21 inches and to the right he walks up and taps in for a par.

Hole 11 par 4, 356 yards. Tries to drive the green and a great shot carrying the water and bunker and ends up over the green in the rough. Chips that out to 10 feet 1 inch, which wasn’t the best but saves it by making the putt to get to -3 and T24.

Hole 12 par 5, 568 yards. 331 off the tee to the fairway. With 218 to the hole he finds the green and over 30 feet for his eagle putt. The right line but left short. 2 feet 10 inches for birdie left and makes that one to move on to now -4 and T13.

Hole 13 par 3, 221 yards. Finds the green and 10 feet 7 inches for the birdie attempt. Putt doesn’t drop and 2 feet left for his par to finish the hole.

Hole 14 par 4, 468 yards. 355 yards off the tee, once again another bomb. Left rough but not a bad spot. 112 to the hole but is short. About 60 feet from the fringe and rolls it up to 6 feet 3 inches. With that left for par the putt does not break the way he thought and about half that distance from the other side. 3 feet for a bogey.

Hole 15 par 4, 495 yards. -3 and T29 after a bogey on 24, he starts off 15 by hitting a 328 yard drive to the middle of the fairway. 171 yards left and he finds the green but 36 feet for his birdie putt. Leaving it short, he has 3 feet 1 inch and lines it up and makes his par.

Hole 16 par 5, 596 yards. Another great drive 331 yards to the fairway and 265 yards left for his second shot. Leaves it short in the bunker and its a deep one. He hits a fantastic shot out to 6 feet 1 inch and makes that to walk away with a birdie. -4 and T19.

Hole 17 par 3. He finds the green and exactly 14 feet for his birdie look. Hitting the putt 3 feet past, he proceeds to lip the par putt and have 3 feet 2 inches for his bogey. Back to -3 and now T28th heading to the last hole.

Hole 18 par 4. The final drive of the day finds the left fairway bunker 322 yards out. 155 left to the hole he hits a great shot onto the green and has 13 feet 1 inch to redeem himself with a closing birdie. Walks up to the green, lines it up, and sinks the last one of the day to go back to -4 and shoot a 68 sitting at T19th as he walked off 18.

End of the day he is -4, 4 shots back of Jon Rahm, Rory McIlroy, and Sam Burns who all sit at -8. Teeing off at 10:57am tomorrow for round 2, hoping to get out there and go even lower to help boost himself up that leaderboard.
