The Northern Trust Round 2

Initial Thoughts

Today was a much better round. A lot less rollercoaster-y and a lot more consistent and overall improvement: no penalty shots, no doubles, add in an eagle, 4 more greens, 3 more fairways hit and you end up with the 34-31-65 (-6) that was today. I think it is safe to say that you couldn't expect him to come out and have 9 birdies a round back to back, but to come out with 7 birdies and an eagle is pretty impressive. Got rid of the really bad holes, and even with some bad shots he turned out to have a birdie and save par a lot.

Hole by Hole Updates

Starting on hole 10, par 4, finds the right side of the fairway with an iron. 254 yards and 248 left. Hits the green but with a 60 foot opening birdie putt. Runs it past about 8 feet and then proceeds to make the par coming back.

Hole 11, par 3. Tee shot is well right of the green. About 40 yards for the chip and gets it to a little inside 10 feet. Runs that past and a 2 footer for bogey.

Hole 12, par 4. Finds the left fairway with a 326 yard drive. Mediocre approach from 90 yards to 30 feet. The putt is close but about a foot past and settles with a par.

Hole 13, par 5. A bomb drive down the fairway 358 yards, almost makes it to the water hazard. Let’s maybe aim a little more right tomorrow? Hits with an iron into the green and it stops. 40 feet uphill runs past about 5 feet. Makes the birdie and back to E.

Going into hole 14, par 3, at 8 shots behind the leaders. 136 off the tee and a dart into 2 feet for a birdie. Finally under par on the day

Hole 15, par 4. Driver off the tee to the fairway. From 175 he hits it to 40 feet. Blows the putt by and misses the 9 footer for par. Bogey and drops a shot. Back to E

Hole 16, par 4. Drives the green with a 317 yard tee shot. Almost makes the long eagle putt from 50 feet but just a little too much break. Tap in birdie and now -1

Hole 17, par 4. 321 yards off the tee to the fairway. 113 to the pin and hits a dart in to 2 feet. Taps that in and now -2 on the day

Hole 18 par 4. Left with the tee shot and over 200 yards in. Ends up in the bunker, hits out and can’t make the 9 footer for par. Tap in bogey

Ends the front 9 with a -1 34. He was T40 making the turn

Hole 1 par 4. Fairway green. Pretty routine and hits the 104 yard approach to 14 feet. Too much speed and a tap in par.

Hole 2 par 3. To the green and a 20 footer for birdie. Another one past the hole by a couple feet and another par.

Hole 3 par 4. 262 yards off the tee, 127 to the green. Great shot in to 5 feet. Walks up and putts it in. Now -2 and T31

Hole 4 par 3. Misses the green right but chips to 6 feet and makes the putt. Par.

Hole 5 par 4. 320 yard bomb off the tee to the middle of the fairway. 86 yards in and another dart to 9 feet with a wedge. Makes the putt and now moved to -3 and T23.

Hole 6 par 5. Wayward right with the driver. Into a bunker from another hole. A little chip out that progresses him about 30 yards. 205 yards to the green from another fairway, and hits the green. 40 feet to the pin and drains the long putt for a birdie. Now -4 and T18. Have you noticed the trend yet?

Hole 7 par 4. Another fairway and green. Not as close from 189 yards out as he hits it to 33 feet. Just misses the putt by another few feet and taps in a par.

Hole 8 par 5. 345 yard bomb off the tee that fades right to the rough. 207 yard second shot that is laid up. Chips from 60 feet and a few bounces and rolls in for an eagle. Jumps now to -6 and T9

Hole 9 par 4. Left off the tee and into the thick stuff. 137 to the hole and hits the green. 22 feet for a birdie but doesn’t fall. 3 feet to close with a par.

Heading to Round 3. . .

Going into tomorrow sitting at T17. 6 shots behind leader Jon Rahm and tied with names like Sungjae Im and Aaron Wise. After a round like yesterday and today, I don't really know what to expect for tomorrow. Seems to be better off the tee and better with the shorter irons into the green as well as scrambling. At the beginning his pace seemed off with putting. I know lag putts aren't easy, but to have some 30-40 foot putts and blow them 9 feet past? Just seems a little extreme. Approach shots weren't giving him many opportunities as multiple were to 25-30 feet. Hopefully he starts off strong and we won't have to worry about the 'learning holes'.
